Because of A Bee
In August 2016, Because of An Acorn debuted. Our son Adam and I wrote the text and Frann Preston-Gannon created the art. The acorn is the fruit or food source of the oak tree which is a keystone species in North America. Keystone species play an extremely large role in maintaining the balance and structure of an ecosystem. So much so, that if a keystone species disappears, the surrounding ecosystem will suffer greatly or completely disappear.
But when writing a book for the youngest listeners/readers, it's important to distill these concepts to specific actions and imagery. This is more difficult than it looks. Thankfully Because of An Acorn has found audiences all around the world and children do understand the interdependence of one species on another.
In May 2026, Because of a Bee will be available. I wrote the text and Frenci Sanna created the art. Like Because of An Acorn, there will be cut-outs in this book, as well. Young readers enjoy them and they encourage prediction and high engagement. Bees, too, are a keystone species. Their crucial role is worldwide. However this book shows the importance of all pollinators and their contributions to our food supply. I'm happy to say that this book is already getting a lot of positive responses from reviewers and industry readers. Fingers crossed that it reaches the wide audience of ACORN. Together, they provide readers with an entertaining explanation of how keystone species impact our lives and the world.
