Workshops for Writers
January 2017 Picture Book Intensive Workshop at Amicalola Falls State Park
If you are interested in creating a marketable picture book text, this is the workshop for you.
We will begin on Thursday, January 12, 2017 for dinner and discussion on the publishing business.
On Friday, January 13 we will begin at 8:45 AM and work through 4:30 PM with a 90-minute lunch break on your own. (I’ve learned that everyone needs time to clear their heads and refresh.) We will meet again for dinner and have more discussions on agents, publishers, submissions, etiquette, etc.
We will repeat Friday’s schedule on Saturday and Sunday, but dismissing at 3:30 PM on Sunday for anyone who needs to fly on that day.
The goal is to take an idea and hone it to a marketable one and then create a draft and revise, revise, revise and walk away with a nearly completed or completed manuscript.
The workshop is limited to five attendees to insure as much one on one time as possible.
All attendees are responsible for their hotel or lodge stays, their meals, and transportation.
In the future, I will be glad to meet with people who are serious about writing picture books (either character-driven fiction or informational) for a three-day intensive at Amicalola Falls State Park Lodge. Each private workshop will only have 2, 3, or 4 attendees. During this time, we will carefully examine award-winning picture books, discuss how to hone in on a marketable idea, practice craft elements, draft, revise, revise, revise until participants leave with a substantive manuscript, or perhaps, a completed script. During informal moments, such as meals, we will discuss the industry and submissions.
Interested parties need to email me with their intention to participate. Expenses will include a lodge room or cabin at Amicalola Falls State Park, your meals, and a workshop stipend.
From Lola’s first picture book intensive:
"What a personal experience in a truly breathtaking environment. Lola is a great teacher; I learned so much in just three days. Her energy, enthusiasm, and encouragement has motivated me to continue to hone my skills as a children’s picture book writer."
- Donna Wallace
"I recently attended a wonderful, and truly intense, picture book writing workshop at Amicalola Falls State Park with Lola Schaefer. After three days of studying award winning picture books, writing, and revising, I left with a completed manuscript. Over the years, I have participated in many picture book workshops, but this was the best."
