Great New Book for Home or School

Here is the cover of the latest book by author Heather Miller – This Is Your Life Cycle. Now you may wonder why I’m promoting this picture book. Several reasons, actually.

First, it’s hilarious narrative non-fiction. That means that it’s jam-packed with real information about the life cycle of a dragonfly, but it’s written in a way that will make you laugh out loud. Since I’m a frequent writing coach in elementary and middle schools, I’m always on the lookout for books that grab kids’ attention and encourage them to take some risks as writers.This book does all that and more. The game-show approach complete with host Bob Beetle is accessible and familiar to most school-age kids. And, the commercial on pages 24-25 is a great example of purposeful writing. It shows how ad agencies target an audience and offer a product that is easy to use and helpful. If you’re a parent, this is a great read-aloud for any child in grades 2-6. If you’re a teacher, This Is Your Life Cycle will captivate your students and demonstrate writing that pops.

How do I know Heather? We co-authored Look Behind! Tales of Animal Ends – another book of narrative nonfiction. But Heather’s talents don’t stop with her writing. She is an artist, as well.
